What is a Model Global Parliament?
A Model Global Parliament is envisaged as a democratically constituted global forum for both geopolitical regions and existing globally significant non-governmental networks to work together in identifying global problems and seeking practical and attainable solutions to them.
Why the MGP ?
The Hon Bob Brown, former leader of the Greens Party in the Senate conceptualized the MGP as a platform to promote a Global Parliament. No such institution exists in the world today, but various people are promoting this and similar ideas. Pera Wells, who is also the Australian representative on the Steering Committee for the Global Interdependence Movement, is constructing this concept in Australia. MGP has already been launched in the University of Melbourne and the Monash University.
The website https://voteworldparliament.org/ calls for a global referendum and poses the question, "Do you support the creation of a directly-elected, representative, transparent, and democratic world parliament that is authorized to legislate on global issues?"
A book has been written on the subject by Christopher Hamer, an Associate Professor at New South Wales University entitled “A Global Parliament – Principles of World Federation.” Prof. Hamer is also the founding President of the World Citizens Association. http://www.worldcitizens.org.au/
Vision and Mission of Model Global Parliament
We are living in a time where regional and global issues continue to challenge Nation States to broaden engagement and seek collaborative solutions. Do we still have time to consider the affect that each resident in a neighbouring country faces when a decision that takes place in another? Where does the National boundary end when global challenges require global solutions?
The Model Global Parliament will address real and pressing issues of our time; its primary goals are to set higher standards for solving global problems with an assembly that represents the diversity of our global community; to disseminate its philosophy worldwide and ultimately to endure. We are looking for a range of high calibre individuals to help us take the Model Global Parliament concept to the next level.
